Re your point that farmers need to know a lot and do a lot of different things, here’s a nice quote from Adam Smith (which I am sure you know but here it is anyway):
“The common ploughman … is seldom defective in this judgement and discretion. He is less accustomed to social intercourse than the mechanic who lives in a town … His understanding, however, being accustomed to consider a greater variety of objects, is generally much superior”.
