A cancerous conspiracy to poison your faith in organic food
Despite its obvious benefits for our health and for the environment, organic food continues to be denigrated by the political and corporate establishment in Britain.

The food industry, in alliance with pharmaceutical and big biotechnology companies, has waged a long, often cynical campaign to convince the public that mass-produced, chemically-assisted and intensively-farmed products are just as good as organic foods, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

Farm killer Martin held over sickle
Tony Martin, the farmer who shot dead a burglar in 1999, has been arrested for having a sickle in the back of his car.

Martin, 64, was held for six hours on suspicion of being in possession of an “offensive weapon”.

He was initially stopped in Wisbech, Cambs, for not wearing a seatbelt and given a £60 fixed penalty.

Application for TB-free status put on hold by farm group
A MEETING between the Scottish Government and stakeholders on Tuesday decided to put on hold submitting an application to the European Commission for recognition of officially tuberculosis free (OTF) regional status for Scotland.

While it was accepted that gaining OFT status would enhance our capacity to keep the disease out of Scotland, the auctioneers and meat wholesalers present expressed reservations.

Finding a cure for pricey pork
Supermarkets take note: pigs are more than two legs, a loin and a belly.

It is the picnic season and I am worrying about the crazy price of cured pork.

Making a rough calculation as I browsed the ham section in a supermarket this week, I wondered how it was possible that just over 50g of organic Serrano ham could cost more than £4 – that’s more than £80 a kilo.

Life as a farmer’s wife: the land girls
Long hours, no holidays, crippling debts – the life of a modern farmer’s wife is anything but easy. But, as these three women tell Jessica Fellowes, they wouldn’t swap it for anything.

On a chilly April night in Suffolk, Karen White was tucked up in bed, trying to get some rest before another day at the office.

But she was soon shaken awake: a cow was calving and having difficulties – could she come down and help?

Outrage as sheep stranded on cliff is shot dead
The plight of a ewe stranded 100ft up a cliff for a month came to a heartbreaking end in the sights of a rifle.

In shocking scenes, the helpless animal was shot dead after animal charity the RSPCA advised a rescue would be too dangerous.

The decision outraged animal lovers who fondly named the sheep Aretha after Rescue Me soul singer Aretha Franklin.
