MPs' expenses: The really dirty secret is how we treat our cleaners
It is no surprise that politicians are largely greedy, says Bryony Gordon
The most surprising element of the revelations about the Cabinet's expenses is not that politicians are largely greedy and corrupt – it would be more of a shock if that wasn't the case. Nor is it that David Miliband seemingly has a weakness for pot plants and chenille throws.
The fact that we seem to have paid for a male MP to menstruate is neither here nor there – and who cares that a Lib Dem put through a £2.50 eyeliner? Politics is, after all, show business for ugly people, and most of them need all the help they can get. Frankly, I wasn't even surprised that one politician had claimed for a 5p carrier bag – more pitying, really.
No, the point that struck me the most was how much Gordon Brown pays his cleaner. As with Jack Straw, our esteemed Justice Secretary, accountancy is not one of my strongest suits. But I have done some sums and I am shocked and saddened – nay, stunned – by the results.
